Before you buy
When choosing your new washing machine, in addition to the standard features that you consider such as price, capacity and will it look good in my kitchen please also look carefully at energy efficiency and water efficiency.
Evidently Britain uses more water per head than any other European country and with weather patterns changing and the cost of recycling water getting more expensive in terms of both cost and the environment, we need to change our usage patterns.
Action plan: make sure that the washing machine is full and perhaps soak heavily soiled clothes prior to washing, look for washing machines that have wash programmes that allow for half loads or, if you are only a two person household, consider a smaller size washing machine. Also, try and avoid unnecessary pre-wash cycles.

Dont't buy a washing machine before reading the latest Which? review.

Dispose or recycle your old washing machine
As per the new WEEE legislation, electronic goods have to be disposed of by specialist contractors. Many retailers offer a service to pick up large appliances and electrical items on a like for like basis,i.e. buy a new television and they will pick up your old one on delivery. The prices charged for this disposal service varies between shops. The table below illustrates the disposal charges for the major high street retailers, and are an important consideration along with delivery charges:
| Retailer | Washing Machines | More information |
| Comet | £8.95 | Comet recycling policy |
| Currys | Free | Currys recycling policy |
| Dixons | £5.00 | Dixons recycling policy |
| John Lewis | £9.00 | John Lewis recycling policy |
